Zepbound® is a dual-agonist GIP/GLP-1 medication. It boosts insulin production (which lowers blood sugar levels), reduces appetite and slows digestion. Altogether, Zepbound® reduces appetite and makes you feel full longer, which can help reduce calorie consumption and lead to weight loss. It's taken by injection one time per week.

* Prescription treatment requires a virtual medical consultation with a medical provider to determine if a prescription is appropriate.

About Zepbound®

How does it work?

Zepbound works by mimicking hormones naturally made in the body. It helps the pancreas produce more insulin, which lowers blood sugar levels and keeps them steady. It slows the speed food leaves the stomach (gastric emptying), promoting a feeling of fullness. And it alters the brain’s hunger signals, so you feel less hungry in general. Altogether, these encourage reduced calorie intake and promote weight loss.

What does it treat?

Zepbound treats excess weight in those with a BMI of or above 27.

What forms does it come in?

Zepbound comes as an injectable medication. You inject Zepbound into fatty tissue under the skin, usually one time every week. It comes in disposable pens prefilled with various dosages. Most prescribers start patients on a low dose and increase the dosage. This process (called titration) gives patients time to adjust to potential side effects.

Zepbound® vs. Tirzepatide

Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Zepbound—it's what makes the medication work. Zepbound is the brand name of the medication.

How do you take this medication?

You inject this weight loss medication under the skin 1 time per week, usually into your stomach, thigh or upper arm. Rotating injection sites can help reduce the risk of skin injury. For the best results, follow your medical provider’s instructions carefully.

How should you safely store this medication?
  • To protect Zepbound pens from light, store them in their original packaging
  • Store in the refrigerator (36°-46°F) (2°C-8°C)
  • Do not freeze
  • While using, keep pens at room temperature (up to 86°F), away from direct heat and light
  • Keep it out of reach of children and pets
  • If the date on the medication package has expired, do not use it

If you’re traveling or don’t have access to a fridge, you can store your Zepbound pens at room temperature (up to 86°F) for up to 21 days. Do not put pens stored at room temperature back into the refrigerator. After 21 days, throw away all unused pens that have been stored at room temperature at any time.

Storage instructions vary for different brands and medication formulations. Carefully read the instructions that come with your medication before storing it. If you have any questions, ask your pharmacist or provider.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take your Zepbound injection and it’s within 4 days (96 hours) of your missed dose, take it as soon as possible. But if you’re within 3 days (72 hours) of your next dose, skip that dose. Wait until your next scheduled day, and take an injection then. (In other words, you’ll skip a week of medication.)

Don’t inject two doses of Zepbound at one time. (This will increase the risk of side effects and interrupt your treatment schedule.) If you miss two or more doses in a row, talk to your medical provider. They may have you restart your dosing level or treatment schedule.

What happens if I take too much?

Taking too much Zepbound can cause low blood sugar, which can cause confusion, shakiness and sweating. Severe cases can even lead to fainting or seizures.

If you think you may have accidentally taken too much Zepbound, call your provider or local poison control center (800-222-1222) immediately.
