Hair Loss Questions

About Hair Loss

What causes hair loss?

Common causes of hair loss are natural aging, stress, hereditary genetics or hormonal changes.

Medical conditions that result in hair loss include severe infections of the scalp, such as folliculitis decalvans, which damages the hair follicles and prevents new hair growth, and alopecia areata, a condition where the body's immune system attacks the hair follicles, resulting in bald spots. Intense shock can also cause hair loss, which is known as telogen effluvium.

What are the treatments Dr. B offers for hair loss?

Dr. B offers both generic and brand versions of Dutasteride and Finasteride to treat male pattern baldness. Both Dutasteride and Finasteride decrease the level of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male sex hormone, in the body, which slows the rate of hair loss.

Does Dr. B offer hair loss treatments for female pattern baldness?

Dr. B does not currently offer baldness treatment for those assigned-female-at-birth. Dutasteride and Finasteride cannot be used by women or children.

What are PSA levels and why are they important?

Dutasteride and Finasteride lower PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels in those who are assigned-male-at-birth. PSA levels help doctors determine whether someone is at risk for prostate cancer. When Dutasteride and Finasteride are taken, they lower PSA levels, and can skew the results of prostate cancer screenings. Healthcare providers should be alerted to the use of this medication in order to better analyze PSA test results.

How are hair loss treatments applied?

Dr. B's current selection of hair loss treatments are taken orally, either as a capsule or tablet.

What are common hair loss treatment side effects?

Common side effects of Dutasteride and Finasteride include impotence, decreased libido, ejaculation disorders (decrease in the amount of semen/sperm released during sex), breast disorders (increased breast size, breast tenderness) and testicle pain or swelling. These symptoms are typically mild and may go away over time. However, stop taking this medication and see your doctor right away if you experience: testicle pain/swelling, an increase in breast size/tenderness or prolonged sexual dysfunction.

How can I get a hair loss prescription online?

With Dr. B, you can conveniently access a hair loss prescription through our online medical service. The process is accessible: you'll fill out a comprehensive health assessment about your symptoms and history. A vetted doctor or medical provider will review your assessment. If your provider recommends a hair loss prescription, it will be sent to your pharmacy of choice. Dr. B offers several different brand and generic medications for hair loss, most of which can help provide results in as little as three months.

How much does a hair loss treatment cost?

Consultation: A virtual medical consultation for hair loss costs $15.00, which is lower than most doctor co-pays. Currently we don’t submit medical consultation claims to insurance companies, but you can use insurance for the prescription itself at your pharmacy.

Medication: Dr. B only charges for the prescription consultation. When medications are prescribed, we enable you to choose the most affordable or convenient pharmacy to get the prescription filled. Prices for your medication will vary depending on your insurance coverage and whether the drug is a brand or generic.

Do you accept insurance?

At this time we don’t submit medical consultation claims to insurance companies, but you can use insurance for the hair loss prescription at your pharmacy.

How do refills work?

We’ll send you a reminder for an online assessment when it’s time for your next refill.

The whole team at Dr. B has been so helpful, making sure I got the best-suited medicine and checking up to see how things are going.
