Dandruff Questions

About Dandruff

What is dandruff?

Dandruff, a form of seborrheic dermatitis, is an inflammatory skin disease as well as a fungal infection on the surface of the skin. It mainly affects areas where there are many oil-producing sebaceous glands, such as the scalp. Dandruff causes flaking or scaly skin, rashes, and itchiness. This condition can be irritating, but it's not contagious. In addition to dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, it’s sometimes called seborrheic eczema or seborrheic psoriasis.

What causes dandruff?

While the exact cause of this condition isn’t clear, it’s thought that an overgrowth of the yeast Malassezia is the main cause. Excess oil in the skin or a problem in the immune system may also result in dandruff.

Is dandruff a chronic condition?

Yes. Dandruff (or seborrheic dermatitis) is a lifelong condition that can flare up from time to time.

Are seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff the same thing?

When found on the scalp seborrheic dermatitis is referred to as dandruff. However it can also occur on other areas of the body, such as the face, sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids, chest and around the body folds.

What prescription treatments are available?

Antifungal foams that come in gels, oils and shampoos are commonly prescribed to treat dermatitis and dandruff. These treatments are typically Ketoconazole-,  Ciclopirox- or Selenium-sulfide-based. Some shampoos and scalp oils also use Fluocinolone, a synthetic anti-inflammatory corticosteroid.

How is a dandruff treatment applied?

Foams and gel products are applied and left on for a few hours before showering. Shampoos are applied in the shower. Scalp oil treatments are massaged into the scalp after showering.

What are common treatment side effects?

Common side effects may include: burning, redness, dryness and irritation. These symptoms are typically mild and may diminish over time. Talk to your medical provider if these symptoms continue or worsen over time.

How can I get a dandruff prescription online?

Sometimes dandruff requires prescription treatment. Dr. B can help! Our online medical service walks you through a comprehensive assessment of your health and symptoms. Next a doctor or medical provider will review your assessment and if a prescription dandruff medication is right for you, they'll send a prescription to your preferred pharmacy for local pick-up.

How much does dandruff treatment cost?

Consultation: A virtual medical consultation for dandruff costs $15.00, which is lower than most doctor co-pays. Currently we don’t submit medical consultation claims to insurance companies, but you can use insurance for any resulting prescriptions at your pharmacy.

Medication: Dr. B only charges for the medical consultation. When medications are prescribed, we enable you to choose the most affordable or convenient pharmacy to get the prescription filled. Prices for your medication will vary depending on your insurance coverage and whether the drug is a brand or generic.

Do you accept insurance?

At this time we don’t submit medical consultation claims to insurance companies, but you can use insurance for any resulting prescriptions at your pharmacy.

How do refills work?

We’ll send you a reminder for an online assessment when it’s time for your next refill.

The whole team at Dr. B has been so helpful, making sure I got the best-suited medicine and checking up to see how things are going.
