About Wegovy®

How does it work?

Wegovy® works by acting like the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone in your body that makes you feel full after eating. It helps regulate your appetite, so you might eat less and shed pounds when you take it while exercising regularly and eating nourishing meals.

What does it treat?

Wegovy® helps some people with higher BMI manage their weight. Typically, it is prescribed for adults who are living with diabetes, high blood pressure or related health concerns. Wegovy® helps control appetite, which can lead to better health over time.

What forms does it come in?

Wegovy® comes in a prefilled injection pen that is easy to use. Pens are available in different doses, and your medical provider will prescribe the best dose for you. You take one dose of Wegovy® a week by injecting the medication under your skin.

Semaglutide vs. Wegovy®

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic®* and Wegovy®*. It’s what makes them work. Semaglutide is the generic name for these brand-name medications. The FDA has approved Semaglutide for weight management in adults with higher BMI or certain health conditions related to weight. It works best when used together with increased physical activity and a lower-calorie eating plan.

How do you use this medication?

Wegovy® is a medication that gets injected under the skin (subcutaneously) using an injection pen. Typical injection spots are the stomach or abdomen, thigh or upper arm. Wegovy® should not be injected into muscles (intramuscularly) or veins (intravenously).

Here’s how to take Wegovy®:

  1. Follow the directions from your medical provider, who will explain how to use the prefilled injection pen.
  2. Use Wegovy® once a week, always on the same day. You can take it at any time of the day, with or without food.
  3. Your pen will contain the prescribed dose. Use each Wegovy® pen only once.
  4. Before injecting the medication, clean the skin on your stomach, thigh or upper arm.
  5. Inject Wegovy® under the skin using the pen.
  6. To avoid bruising or pain, regularly rotate where you make the injection.
What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss your regular dose of Wegovy®, take the next one as soon as you remember—unless it's within 2 days of your next scheduled dose. In that case, wait and stick to your regular schedule of one dose. Do not double up on doses to make up for a missed injection. If you're not sure what to do after missing a dose, talk with your medical provider.
