Fungal Infection Questions
About Fungal Infection
What types of fungal infections do you treat?
We provide several types of antifungal treatment for a variety of common infections of the skin, including ringworm (tinea corporis), athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) and jock itch (tinea cruris). We also treat types of fungus that affect fingernails or toenails (onychomycosis).
What causes fungal infections?
Infections occur when certain types of harmful fungi—tiny microorganisms all around us—come in contact with the body. Exposure to fungi is more common in warm, damp environments. Infections can spread through direct contact with infected shoes, socks, towels, swimming pool perimeters or locker rooms.
How long does a fungal infection last?
Fungal infections on the skin can take a few days or a few weeks to get better. It’s important to take your antifungal medicine for as long as it’s prescribed. (The infection may still be there even after the rash improves.)
Onychomycosis—or fungal infections of the nail—can be more difficult to treat. It may take up to a year of treatment to get rid of the infection, and the infection can come back even with treatment.
Do I have a fungal infection or…?
Several other conditions have similar symptoms. These include:
- Psoriasis
- Eczema
- Lichen planus
- Seborrheic dermatitis, including cradle cap
- Trauma or injury
- Some kinds of skin cancer
A medical provider can help you understand what might be causing your symptoms and help you find the right treatment.
What are the prescription treatments available for fungal infections?
A range of topical fungal infection medicines are available as creams, lotions, gels, nail lacquers and shampoos.
How do topical antifungal treatments work?
Some antifungal medications eliminate fungi. Others prevent cell growth and multiplication. Fungal infections differ from bacterial infections—and antibiotics can’t treat them.
What are common antifungal treatment side effects?
Side effects of antifungal medications may include itching, burning or redness at the application site. In rare cases, these medications can cause serious side effects like liver damage (jaundice). They may also cause severe skin reactions (like peeling). Talk to your medical provider right away if these occur.
Who is at risk for fungus?
Anyone can develop a fungal infection—but people with a weakened immune system are at greater risk. (Like those with HIV or cancer, organ transplant recipients and anyone taking immune-suppressing medications.) These infections can also occur more frequently in people who sweat a lot (hyperhidrosis). And nail infections are more common in people with poor circulation. (Like those with peripheral vascular disease or diabetes.)
How long does it take for antifungal medications to work?
It depends on the type of fungal infection and treatment. Many medications improve skin infections in around a week. Most infections clear entirely in two to four weeks. But some infections in the nail can take longer to resolve. Some of these medications are prescribed for 48 weeks or more, which is how long it takes for healthy nails to grow and replace infected ones.
How can I get a fungal infection prescription online?
Some fungal skin infections require prescription treatment. Dr. B is here to help. Our online medical service guides you through a health assessment covering your symptoms and medical history. (No video call required!) A licensed provider will then review your information. If they recommend a ketoconazole topical cream prescription or other kind of treatment, they’ll send a prescription to your pharmacy. And if you feel overwhelmed by your options? Your doctor or medical provider can help you understand which medication will get you back on track.
How much does a fungal infection treatment cost?
Consultation: A virtual medical consultation for fungal infection costs $15, which is lower than most doctor copays. Currently, we don’t submit medical consultation claims to insurance companies. But you can use insurance for any resulting prescription at your pharmacy.
Medication: Dr. B only charges for the medical consultation. When medications are prescribed, we let you choose the most affordable or convenient pharmacy to fill the prescription. Your medication prices will vary depending on your insurance coverage and whether the drug is a brand or generic.
