About Liraglutide (Generic Liraglutide)
How does it work?
Liraglutide mimics the glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) hormone made naturally in the body. It works by stimulating insulin production, which lowers blood sugar levels. It also slows down how quickly food leaves your stomach and helps you feel full longer, so you eat less.
What does it treat?
Liraglutide treats type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar. Because it also encourages fullness and helps people eat less, it is also prescribed to those with higher BMI to help manage their weight.
What forms does it come in?
Liraglutide usually comes as a liquid that you inject under the skin. It may come in a multi-dose vial or pen, depending on the type. Your provider will tell you which form you are using and how to use it safely.
Semaglutide vs. Wegovy® or Ozempic®
Liraglutide is the active ingredient in the Saxenda®*. It’s what makes the medication work. Saxenda® is FDA-approved for weight loss and comes in a prefilled autoinjector pen. Some people use a compounded version of Liraglutide made by licensed pharmacies, which may come in vials to be injected via syringes.
