Mounjaro® is a dual-agonist GIP/GLP-1 medication. It increases insulin production, which lowers blood sugar levels. It also slows digestion and reduces appetite, which can help you feel full longer, eat less, and lose weight. It's taken by injection under the skin once weekly.

* Prescription treatment requires a virtual medical consultation with a medical provider to determine if a prescription is appropriate.

About Mounjaro®

How does it work?

Mounjaro works by helping the pancreas produce more insulin, which can lower blood sugar levels and help keep them steady. It also slows the rate by which food leaves the stomach and alters the brain’s hunger signals, so you feel fuller faster and less hungry overall. Altogether, these help patients reduce their caloric intake and achieve their weight loss results.

What does it treat?

Mounjaro is a GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist approved to treat high BMI (overweight or obesity) in people with a BMI of or above 27.

What forms does it come in?

Mounjaro comes as an injectable liquid medication contained in a disposable pen pre-filled with a specific dosage. It is usually taken one time per week. Most patients start Mounjaro treatment on a low dose to avoid common side effects (like nausea, vomiting and diarrhea). Then, their provider will increase the dosage as their body adjusts to the medication.

Mounjaro® vs. Tirzepatide

Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Mounjaro—it's what makes the medication work. Mounjaro is the brand name of the medication.

How do you use this medication?

Mounjaro is injected 1 time per week into the fatty tissue under the skin—usually into your abdomen, upper thigh or upper arm. Rotating injection sites can help reduce the risk of skin injury. For the safest and most comfortable results, always follow your medical provider’s instructions carefully.

How should you safely store this medication?
  • Store your Mounjaro pens in their original packaging, away from light
  • Store in the refrigerator (36°-46°F) (2°C-8°C)
  • Do not freeze
  • While using, keep at room temperature (up to 86°F), away from direct heat and light
  • Keep it out of reach of children and pets
  • If the date on the medication package has expired, do not use it

It’s best practice to store Mounjaro pens in the fridge—refrigeration helps the medication remain stable. If you go on vacation or don’t have access to a refrigerator, you can store Mounjaro pens away from light and heat at room temperature (up to 86°F) for up to 21 days. Do not put pens that have been stored at room temperature back into the refrigerator. Throw away unused room-temperature pens after 21 days.

Storage instructions vary for different brands and medication formulations. Carefully read the instructions that come with your medication before storing. If you have any questions, ask your pharmacist or provider.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take your Mounjaro injection and it’s within 4 days (96 hours) of your missed dose, take it as soon as possible. If you’re within 3 days (72 hours) of your next dose, skip that dose and wait until your next scheduled day. At that time, don’t inject an extra dose of medication, as this can increase side effect risk and interrupt your treatment schedule.

If you miss two or more doses in a row, contact your medical provider. They may have you restart your dosing level or treatment schedule.

What happens if I take too much?

Taking too much Mounjaro can cause low blood sugar—which can cause symptoms including shakiness, sweating and confusion. Severe cases can cause fainting or seizures.

If you think you may have accidentally taken too much Mounjaro, call your provider immediately. You can also contact your local poison control center (800-222-1222).
