About Ozempic®

How does it work?

Semaglutide—the active ingredient in Ozempic—acts like the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone naturally made in your body. This hormone makes you feel full after eating and regulates your appetite. So when taking this medication while exercising and eating well, you might eat less and shed excess pounds.

What does it treat?

Ozempic is a treatment for type 2 diabetes. Because it also helps some people with higher BMI lose excess pounds, it is also prescribed for adults living with diabetes who also have high blood pressure or other health concerns.

What forms does it come in?

This medication comes in a pen that’s pre-filled with 4 doses of medication. Your medical provider will prescribe the best dose for you, and the pen will come with that prescribed dose. You’ll take one dose weekly by attaching a new needle to the Ozempic pen and injecting one dose of medication under your skin.

Semaglutide vs. Ozempic®

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic*. It’s what makes the medication work. Semaglutide is also the active ingredient in Wegovy®*, which has been approved by the FDA as a weight management treatment for adults with higher BMI or certain weight-related health conditions when used with increased physical activity and a lower-calorie eating plan.

What are the benefits of using Ozempic?
  • Reduces AIC levels—a marker of blood sugar
  • Curbs appetite, which can help reduce calorie intake and encourage weight loss
  • Reduces the risk of health concerns, including diabetes and high blood pressure
  • Available in an easy-to-use dosing pen that you inject once a week
Who should not use this medication?
  • Those who are allergic to Semaglutide or any ingredient in Ozempic
  • Those with type 1 diabetes
  • Those who have a family/personal history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a type of thyroid cancer)
  • Those living with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • Those who have a history of pancreatitis
  • Those with a history of or who have experienced depression, suicidal thoughts or other mental health concerns
  • Those with serious kidney problems
  • Those with diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Those who have severe gastrointestinal issues
  • Those who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant

If you have experienced any of the above conditions, you must discuss them with your provider before beginning treatment with Ozempic.

How do you use this medication?

You inject this medication under your skin (subcutaneously) using an injection pen—typically into your stomach, abdomen, upper thigh or upper arm. You should not inject Ozempic into muscles (intramuscularly) or veins (intravenously).

Your provider will explain and demonstrate how to use your prefilled injection pen—always follow their directions. But here’s how most patients take Ozempic:

  1. Inject your Ozempic medication once weekly and always on the same day of the week. You can take your injection at any time during the day, and with or without food.
  2. Your pen will come pre-filled with your prescribed medication dosage and contain 4 doses.
  3. Wash your hands with soap and water, and dry.
  4. Attach an unused needle to your Ozempic pen. Check the pen to make sure it’s your correct dosage, that it has not expired, and that the medication looks clear and colorless.
  5. Before injecting the medication, use an alcohol wipe to clean the skin on your injection site. To avoid pain or bruising at the injection site, choose a new place on your abdomen, upper thigh or upper arm where you’ll make the injection.
  6. Inject Ozempic under the skin using the pen.
  7. Discard the needle into a sharps container and store your pen as instructed by your provider or manufacturer’s directions.
What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss your scheduled dose of Ozempic, take it as soon as you remember—unless it’s been 5 days and you’re within 2 days of your next scheduled dose. If that’s the case, do not take your medication that week. Instead, wait until the day you’re scheduled to take your next dose. On that day, take only one dose—don’t take a second dose to make up for the one you missed. Talk to your provider if you have questions or concerns about a missed dose.

What happens if I take too much?
If you take too much Ozempic, you may feel nauseous or start vomiting. Get medical help immediately by requesting a provider callback at your patient dashboard. You can also call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
Can I get Ozempic online?

Yes. Shed It—Dr. B’s holistic prescription weight loss program—offers Ozempic online to patients who complete an online consultation with a licensed provider.

If you meet certain conditions and are eligible for an Ozempic prescription, your provider will send a prescription to the local pharmacy of your choice. Then, Dr. B will provide all the fitness, nutrition, mental health and financial health tools you need to shed pounds and gain health!
