Yeast infections are uncomfortable and can mess with your plans. An online medical consultation with Dr. B can help you treat your symptoms and move on with your life.*Prescription treatment requires a virtual medical consultation with a medical provider to determine if a prescription is appropriate.
Vaginal yeast infections—also called vulvovaginal candidiasis or vaginal candidiasis—are fungal infections that cause symptoms like itching and irritation of the vagina; a thick, white discharge; swelling and redness; and a burning sensation during urination. The condition is very common, affecting an estimated 75% of women at some point in their life.
These infections occur when the normal balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina becomes disrupted, causing a specific type of yeast—candida—to grow rapidly. Yeast infections result from a variety of causes, including the use of bacteria-killing antibiotics, hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause, increasing levels of sugar in the urine from diabetes or a weakened immune system.
Dr. B offers oral tablets (Fluconazole and its brand equivalent, Diflucan) and vaginal suppositories (Miconazole and Terconazole)—both proven effective treatments. All are antifungal medications that rebalance the natural bacteria and yeast to appropriate levels.
The oral treatments, Fluconazole and Diflucan, are designed to be taken by mouth and are usually effective for curing a yeast infection in a single dose. The vaginal suppositories Miconazole and Terconazole are inserted into the vagina using an applicator.
Common side effects of the oral treatments are stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea or dizziness—all are usually mild. Common side effects of the vaginal suppositories include headache, vaginal burning or itching and stomach cramps. In rare cases, vaginal yeast infection medication can cause liver disease or an allergic reaction. Seek medical help if you experience symptoms such as irregular heartbeat, continuous vomiting, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine or itching and swelling of the face, tongue or throat.
Vaginal yeast infection treatments may interact with other medications, including Clopidogrel, Asunaprevir, Flibanserin, Lemborexant and Warfarin. Talk to your prescribing physician about your medical history and provide a comprehensive list of your current prescriptions.
