Semaglutide helps treat type 2 diabetes by helping the body produce more insulin, which can help control blood sugar. In higher dosages, Semaglutide also helps control appetite and slow down digestion, which can help some people lose weight. It’s usually taken as an injection under the skin one time per week.

About Semaglutide
How does it work?
Semaglutide helps manage weight and diabetes by controlling blood sugar levels and curbing hunger. It mimics a natural hormone called GLP-1 that tells your brain you're full, so you eat less. It also tells your pancreas to make more insulin, which keeps your blood sugar stable. Semaglutide also slows down digestion, which can help reduce appetite and promote weight loss.
What does it treat?
Semaglutide helps people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar levels. Alongside healthy eating and exercise, it also helps some people of higher weights manage their weight. Semaglutide may even reduce the chances of specific heart issues (like heart attacks and strokes) in heavier individuals.
What forms does it come in?
Semaglutide is an injectable drug usually taken once a week. It's also available in prefilled pens for easy use. Another form, under the brand name Rybelsus, is a tablet that is swallowed daily.
Please note that pen injector and oral forms are not listed among the available options on the Dr. B platform at this time.
Semaglutide vs. Wegovy® or Ozempic®
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic®* and Wegovy®*—it makes them “work.” All three medicines can manage blood sugar, help people lose weight, and reduce the risk of heart problems in people with heavier weights.
Ozempic®* and Wegovy®* are brand-name versions of Semaglutide. Ozempic® is usually prescribed for diabetes and comes in an adjustable dosing pen. Wegovy® is generally prescribed as a weight loss medication and comes in pre-filled pens for easy use.
The drug *Ozempic® is not currently available on Dr. B.
