About Vienva (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol)

How does it work?

Vienva and other combination birth control pills help prevent pregnancy in three ways:

  • Stops the ovaries from releasing an egg
  • Thickens the mucus around the cervix, so sperm can travel as easily
  • Makes it harder for eggs to implant in the uterus

What symptoms or conditions can it help manage?

  • Painful periods
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Acne
  • Irregular cycles
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) symptoms
  • Endometriosis pain and inflammation

What forms does it come in?

This form of birth control comes in a blister pack with 28 pills. It includes 21 active tablets (containing hormones) and 7 placebo pills (no hormones) to help you stay on schedule. It’s a monophasic pill, which means all the active pills have the same amount of hormones in them.

Vienva vs. Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol

Vienva is just a brand name for this medicine. Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol are the active hormones in Vienva. They can also be found in other birth control pills, but the amounts or packaging could be slightly different.

How much will it cost?

Dr. B offers online consultations for $15—which is less than most copays. If a birth control prescription is appropriate, your out-of-pocket medication cost will depend on your insurance and where you decide to get your prescription filled. With a drug discount card, prices for Afirmelle (3 28-tablet blister packs) start at $14.57.

Side Effects

Young woman lying in bed, smiling towards her sun-filled window with a hand over her head

Vienva contains lower amounts of hormones than other hormonal birth control, so it can be a good choice for people who struggle with side effects. If you do have side effects, they’re usually mild. This birth control method could cause:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Stomach cramps or bloating
  • Spotting (bleeding between periods)
  • Breast tenderness
  • Changes in your weight
  • Headaches
  • Depression
  • Increased blood pressure

Tell your health provider right away or get emergency help if your side effects are bothering you, or if you notice any worrying symptoms. These could include dizziness, confusion, chest pain, breathing problems, muscle cramps or sudden weakness or numbness.
