Simvastatin is a cholesterol medication that can help protect the heart and blood vessels. It’s used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise. This medicine works by reducing cholesterol production in the liver, which can help increase "good" cholesterol and lower levels of "bad" cholesterol. It’s the generic version of Zocor.

Please note: At this time, this medication is only prescribed as a refill at Dr. B.

About Simvastatin (Generic Zocor)

How does it work?

Simvastatin blocks a liver enzyme that is involved in making cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fatty substance that can build up and block blood flow. Lower cholesterol levels mean that blood flows more easily. This may reduce the risk of problems like heart attack, stroke and chest pain (angina).

What does it treat?

This cholesterol medicine is used to treat high levels of "bad" (LDL) cholesterol in the blood. It may also lower the risk of heart attack or stroke in people with risk factors for developing heart disease.

What forms does it come in?

This cholesterol treatment is available as a tablet or a liquid suspension. It’s usually taken once a day in the evenings.

Simvastatin vs. Zocor

Zocor is the brand name for Simvastatin. Brand and generic cholesterol medications are equally safe. They both work the same way to lower the risk of heart disease and reduce cholesterol levels. Generics can be more affordable depending on your insurance.

How much will it cost?

Dr. B offers online consultations for $15—which is less than most copays. If a high cholesterol prescription is appropriate, your out-of-pocket medication cost will depend on your insurance and where you decide to get your prescription filled. With a drug discount card, prices for Simvastatin 10 mg (30 tablets) start at $6.38.

This medicine is usually taken once daily in the evening, with or without food. Take the medicine around the same time every day. Follow your medical provider's guidance carefully for the best results.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it's close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose. Just continue with your regular dosing schedule after that.

To minimize the risk of taking an excessive amount of Simvastatin, it is best to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions diligently.

Side Effects

Not everyone will experience side effects when taking Simvastatin. If you do have side effects, they’re usually mild and may include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle damage (muscle cramping, pain and weakness)

Check with your healthcare provider right away if you experience dark urine, diarrhea, fever, muscle cramps or spasms, muscle pain or stiffness, extreme fatigue, or weakness, as these may indicate the presence of a severe muscle condition known as rhabdomyolysis, which can potentially lead to kidney complications.

If you experience muscle pain, reach out to your medical provider immediately.

It's extremely important to note that using Simvastatin increases the risk of serious muscle problems, which can manifest as myopathy with symptoms like muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. Myopathy can lead to rhabdomyolysis, a condition where muscle breakdown can lead to kidney damage and, in severe cases, life-threatening consequences such as death.
