About Losartan (Generic Cozaar)

How does it work?

Losartan works by relaxing blood vessels and reducing the body's production of angiotensin II—a substance that can constrict blood vessels and raise blood pressure. This relaxation of blood vessels helps to lower blood pressure and improve blood flow, reducing the workload on the heart.

What does it treat?

Losartan is used to treat people with high blood pressure (hypertension). It can also be prescribed to lower the risk of stroke in specific individuals with heart disease. And it can help protect the kidneys of people with diabetes who have high blood pressure.

What forms does it come in?

This hypertension medicine comes as tablets typically taken by mouth with water.

Losartan vs. Cozaar

Both medications contain the same active ingredient and treat high blood pressure in the same way. Losartan is the generic name for the medication, while Cozaar is a brand-name version of the same drug. Cozaar is more recognizable—but often more expensive—than Losartan.

How much will it cost?

Dr. B offers online consultations for $15—which is less than most copays. If a high blood pressure prescription is appropriate, your out-of-pocket medication cost will depend on your insurance and where you decide to get your prescription filled. With a drug discount card, prices for Losartan 25 mg (30 tablets) start at $7.52.

Taking this medication when you have these conditions should be carefully and closely monitored by a healthcare provider.

Also tell your medical provider about any other medications you’re using before you start this hypertension treatment.

How do you take this medication?

This hypertension treatment is usually taken orally, with or without food, as instructed by your licensed health provider. To get the most benefit, take it at the same time daily.

High blood pressure is a long-term (chronic) condition that can harm your organs. Medications for blood pressure are not a one-time cure. This medicine doesn't provide a complete cure for high blood pressure, so it's important to continue taking it, even if you start feeling better. If you stop taking it suddenly, this could cause dangerous problems, like heart attack or stroke. Follow your medical provider's instructions carefully.

Also, please keep in mind that it may take some time for this medication to achieve its full effect in managing your blood pressure. Don't be discouraged if you don't notice immediate changes. Continue taking your medication as prescribed, and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.

What happens if I miss a dose?
If you forget to take your scheduled Losartan dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's getting close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Don't take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.
What happens if I take too much?

Taking too much of this medication can cause severe dizziness and fainting. If you suspect you’ve taken too much, immediately call your health provider or local poison control (800-222-1222). If you experience severe symptoms like blacking out or breathing issues, immediately seek emergency help.

Can I get Losartan (Generic Cozaar) online?

Dr. B offers online hypertension consultations for medication refills only. Right now, we can’t provide a first-time hypertension prescription.
