Benicar HCT is the brand-name version of Olmesartan-Hydrochlorothiazide, a combination medication that reduces blood pressure to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The tablets contain an angiotensin II receptor blocker and a diuretic. The angiotensin II receptor blocker relaxes blood vessels. The diuretic removes excess fluid and electrolytes from the body.

About Benicar HCT (Olmesartan-Hydrochlorothiazide)

How does it work?

This hypertension medicine combines two drugs—Olmesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide. Olmesartan blocks angiotensin II, a hormone that narrows blood vessels. Hydrochlorothiazide is a “water pill” (diuretic) that helps the body remove excess salt and water. Together, these medications lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels and reducing fluid buildup in the body.

What does it treat?

Benicar HCT is a high blood pressure (hypertension) treatment. Hypertension happens when the force of blood against the artery walls gets too high. By lowering blood pressure, it also reduces the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other heart-related problems.

What forms does it come in?

Benicar HCT comes in the form of tablets. These tablets contain a combination of Olmesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide in different strengths. This allows flexible dosing to manage high blood pressure.

Benicar HCT vs. Olmesartan-Hydrochlorothiazide

These are essentially the same medications with different names. Benicar HCT is a brand name, while Olmesartan-Hydrochlorothiazide is a generic version. They both contain two active ingredients—Olmesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide. They work together to treat high blood pressure, with the Hydrochlorothiazide helping to remove extra salt and water from the body.

How much will it cost?

Dr. B offers online consultations for $15—which is less than most copays. If a high blood pressure prescription is appropriate, your out-of-pocket medication cost will depend on your insurance and where you decide to get your prescription filled. With a drug discount card, prices for Olmesartan 20 mg-Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg (30 tablets) start at $17.98.

  • Protects the kidneys
  • Improves heart function
Who should not take this medication?
  • People allergic to Olmesartan or Hydrochlorothiazide
  • People with a known allergy or severe reaction to ARBs (Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers), diuretics or sulfonamide-derived drugs
  • Pregnant women, breastfeeding or those planning to become pregnant
  • People with a history of gout

  • Those who are taking Neprilysin Inhibitors like Entresto (Sacubitril/Valsartan)

If you have any of these conditions—or a history of dehydration, heart failure, diabetes, liver problems, adrenal gland problems, primary aldosteronism (a condition that causes the adrenal glands to produce too much aldosterone, a hormone that helps regulate blood pressure), or collagen vascular disease (such as lupus or scleroderma)—speak with your healthcare provider before starting this medication.

Taking this medication when you have these conditions should be carefully and closely monitored by a healthcare provider.

Also tell your medical provider about any other medications you’re using before you start this hypertension treatment.

How do you take this medication?

You take Benicar HCT by mouth with or without food, usually once a day, as directed by your licensed medical provider. To manage high blood pressure effectively, follow your health provider’s instructions carefully, and do not skip doses.

High blood pressure is a long-term (chronic) condition that can harm your organs. Medications for blood pressure are not a one-time cure. This medicine doesn't provide a complete cure for high blood pressure, so it's important to continue taking it, even if you start feeling better. If you stop taking it suddenly, this could cause dangerous problems, like heart attack or stroke. Follow your medical provider's instructions carefully.

Also, please keep in mind that it may take some time for this medication to achieve its full effect in managing your blood pressure. Don't be discouraged if you don't notice immediate changes. Continue taking your medication as prescribed, and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Benicar HCT, take it as soon as you remember. But if it's almost time for your next dose? Just skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Don't take extra medication to make up for the amount you missed.

What happens if I take too much?

Taking too much Benicar HCT can cause overdose symptoms like severe dizziness or fainting. If you experience these while on this medication, immediately call your medical provider or local poison control center (800-222-1222).
