About Amlodipine (Generic Norvasc)

How does it work?

Amlodipine helps relax and widen the blood vessels in your body. Doing this makes it easier for your heart to pump blood, which can lower blood pressure and make your heart work more efficiently.

What does it treat?

Amlodipine is a treatment for high blood pressure (hypertension). It works by relaxing blood vessels and increasing blood flow, which helps lower blood pressure.

What forms does it come in?

This hypertension medicine comes in two primary forms: tablets and liquid. The tablet form is most common and is usually taken by mouth. People who have trouble swallowing pills may prefer the liquid form.

Amlodipine vs. Norvasc

Amlodipine and Norvasc are the same medication. But Amlodipine is the generic name, and Norvasc is a brand name for the same drug. They both work in the same way to treat conditions like high blood pressure.

How much will it cost?

Dr. B offers online consultations for $15—which is less than most copays. If a high blood pressure prescription is appropriate, your out-of-pocket medication cost will depend on your insurance and where you decide to get your prescription filled. How do you take this medication?

This medication is taken orally once a day, with or without food. Your health provider may adjust your dose as needed.

High blood pressure is a long-term (chronic) condition that can harm your organs. Medications for blood pressure are not a one-time cure. This medicine doesn't provide a complete cure for high blood pressure, so it's important to continue taking it, even if you start feeling better. If you stop taking it suddenly, this could cause dangerous problems, like heart attack or stroke. Follow your medical provider's instructions carefully.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if you’re close to your next scheduled dose, don’t take it or double the amount of your next dose. Just skip it and return to your regular dosing schedule.

What happens if I take too much?

Taking too much of this medication can lead to overdose symptoms including hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), fainting, and severe dizziness.

If you think you may have taken too much of this medication, immediately call your local poison control center (800-222-1222) or medical provider.

Most people don’t experience side effects when taking Amlodipine. When they do present, they’re often mild. Such mild side effects include:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Swelling of arms, legs, hands or feet
  • Dizziness

Contact your health provider immediately if you experience severe side effects like shortness of breath, palpitations, sweating, chest pains or fainting. In rare cases, this medication can cause liver disease. So seek emergency care right away if you experience signs of liver problems like nonstop vomiting or nausea, stomach pains, abdominal swelling, dark urine or yellowing eyes or skin.

Don’t drive until you know how this medicine affects you. Be extra careful in the first hours after taking your pill because of the risk of dizziness or lightheadedness.

Getting your blood tested regularly is important to monitor your overall health. It's a good idea to have your bloodwork checked, which may include tests for renal function, glucose levels or potassium levels in your blood. These routine checks help ensure you are in good health and catch any potential issues early.
