About Metronidazole (Generic Metrogel)

How does it work?

This antibiotic fights harmful bacteria and (some) parasites in our bodies, stopping the tiny invaders from growing and spreading. This helps our immune system defeat them so that we can feel better.

What does it treat?

Metronidazole treats bacterial infections like bacterial vaginosis. It can also help infections caused by tiny organisms (parasites). This can help with conditions in the stomach, skin, joints and other body parts. (That’s why it’s also often used as a rosacea treatment.) It does not treat viral infections like flu or the common cold.

What forms does it come in?

Metronidazole comes as pills, liquids and creams. The condition you have will determine the form you’re prescribed.

Metronidazole vs. Metrogel

Both contain the same medicine—but they're used in different ways. Metronidazole comes as a pill or a liquid and so can treat various infections in the body. Metrogel comes in a gel form and is mainly used to treat skin problems like rosacea.

How much will it cost?

Dr. B offers online consultations for $15—which is less than most copays. If a BV prescription is appropriate, your out-of-pocket medication cost will depend on your insurance and where you decide to get your prescription filled. With a drug discount card, prices for Metronidazole 500 mg (14 tablets) start at $4.16.
