Affecting an estimated 30 million men in the U.S., erectile dysfunction is a condition characterized by the chronic inability to achieve or maintain erections firm enough for sexual intercourse. ED frequency increases with age and can be an indicator of other health conditions.
Erectile dysfunction can have a wide range of underlying causes, as sexual arousal is a multifaceted process involving hormones, muscles, emotions and brain activity. The condition can stem from physical issues like heart problems, high cholesterol or obesity. It can also be linked to psychological sources such as stress, anxiety or relationship issues. Identifying and treating the underlying causes of erectile dysfunction often improves the condition.
We offer a range of treatments for ED, but they all work in a similar way—by relaxing and expanding blood vessels to improve blood flow to the penis. These medications, known as PDE5 inhibitors, work by inhibiting the phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme, stopping the breakdown of a compound called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which helps trap blood in the penile tissue. PDE5 inhibitors won’t cause sexual arousal on their own, but will make it easier to achieve and maintain an erection when stimulated.
ED treatments are tablets or oral suspensions taken by mouth. Generally, the medications should be taken 30 to 60 minutes before sex, and no more than once per day.
Common side effects of erectile dysfunction treatments include facial flushing, headaches, upset stomach, dizziness and nasal congestion. These symptoms are typically mild and may diminish over time. In rare cases, more serious symptoms can occur. Seek medical care immediately if you experience decreased vision, loss of hearing or an erection lasting more than 4 hours.
Erectile dysfunction treatments can interact with other medications such as nitrates, azole antifungals, macrolide antibiotics and HIV protease inhibitors such as Indinavir and Ritonavir. These medications may make you dizzy or cause vision problems, especially when combined with alcohol or marijuana (cannabis). Talk to your medical provider about your medical history and provide a comprehensive list of your current prescriptions.
Yes, you should let your doctor know about all the medications you are taking. Moreover, erectile dysfunction is commonly a symptom of other health conditions. It’s important that you talk to your primary care physician regarding routine health maintenance.
