Minoxidil is used to treat some kinds of hereditary hair loss, including male pattern baldness. It works by increasing blood flow to the scalp and extending the growth phase of hair follicles. This medicine is applied directly to the scalp as a solution or foam. It’s also available as an oral medication (taken by mouth). Rogaine is the brand-name version of the topical form.

About Minoxidil (Generic Rogaine)
How does it work?
Minoxidil stimulates hair growth in several ways. It widens blood vessels to help increase blood flow to hair follicles. It also affects the hair growth cycle so hair follicles stay in the “growing” phase longer. It only works for as long as you use it, though. So if you stop using Minoxidil, your hair will go back to the way it used to before you started treatment.
What does it treat?
This medication treats some kinds of hereditary hair loss, including male pattern baldness—also known as androgenic alopecia. There are other types of hair loss, though. Your medical provider can help you understand if Minoxidil (Rogaine) is right for your condition. What forms does it come in?
Minoxidil comes as a topical solution and foam you apply to the scalp. It also comes as oral tablets you ingest. (Note that Dr. B does not offer oral Minoxidil at this time.)
Minoxidil vs. Rogaine
Rogaine is a brand version of Minoxidil. Both medicines work the same way to treat male pattern baldness and other forms of hereditary hair loss.
How much will it cost?
Dr. B offers online consultations for $15—which is less than most copays. If a hair loss prescription is appropriate, your out-of-pocket medication cost will depend on your insurance and where you decide to get your prescription filled. With a drug discount card, prices for Minoxidil 2 % Topical Solution (60 mL bottle) start at $2.65.
