About Tamiflu (Oseltamivir)

How does it work?

Tamiflu works by stopping the flu virus from spreading in your body. It does this by blocking a part of the virus that helps it multiply. This can help people with the flu recover more quickly.

What does it treat?

This flu treatment can prevent people from getting the flu after they’ve been exposed to the virus. If it’s taken within the first 2 days of feeling sick, it can also help people recover more quickly. It doesn’t help bacterial infections (like strep throat) or other viral infections (like COVID-19).

People often use this medicine for the flu without knowing the exact flu strain they have. However, it only works for Influenza A or B. So, if your flu is due to some other virus, it probably won't help.

What forms does it come in?

Tamiflu can be taken as a capsule or a liquid suspension. The capsules are swallowed with water. If you have trouble swallowing the capsules, you can open the capsule, pour the powder into a bowl and mix it with a sweetened liquid (like applesauce or chocolate syrup). The liquid suspension shouldn’t be mixed with any other liquids.

Tamiflu vs. Oseltamivir

Tamiflu and Oseltamivir are actually the same thing. Oseltamivir is just the generic name for this medication. Both medicines work the same way to stop the virus from spreading in your body.

How much will it cost?

Dr. B offers online consultations for $15—which is less than most copays. If a flu prescription is appropriate, your out-of-pocket medication cost will depend on your insurance and where you decide to get your prescription filled. With a drug discount card, prices for Oseltamivir 75mg (10 capsules) start at $19.59.

  • Shortens the duration of flu by about 1 or 2 days
  • Reduces the severity of flu symptoms

Who should not take this medication?

Your health provider also needs to know if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or if you have kidney problems. They may need to adjust your dose or treatment plan.

How do you take this medication?

When taken to treat flu symptoms, this medication is usually taken twice a day for about 5 days. Taking it with food can reduce the chances of having side effects like stomach upset or nausea. If you take this medicine to prevent the flu, your dose could be different. Follow your licensed provider’s directions about using this medicine correctly.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Tamiflu, take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is less than two hours away, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. If you miss several doses in a row, talk to your healthcare provider.

What happens if I take too much?

Taking more than your prescribed dose won’t help you get better faster. Taking too much of this medicine might lead to side effects like nausea, vomiting or stomach pain. It could also cause more serious issues, like liver damage.

If you’ve taken too much Tamiflu, call your medical provider or local poison control center (800-222-1222) immediately.

Can I get Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) online?

If you’re experiencing flu symptoms - like fever, body aches and tiredness – and it’s been less than 2 days since your symptoms started, then a prescription flu treatment could help you recover faster. Dr. B can connect you with a licensed medical provider who will review your medical history and symptoms to see whether a prescription flu medicine is right for you. Just fill out a short health questionnaire to get started.
