About Oxistat (Oxiconazole Nitrate)

How does it work?

Oxistat stops the growth of fungi on the skin. It works by disrupting fungal cell membranes (this is the outer layer of the fungus). Without these membranes, the fungi can’t reproduce or survive.

What does it treat?

This antifungal medication is used to treat skin infections caused by fungus. It is most commonly used to treat athlete's foot, jock itch and ringworm. It can also be used to treat pityriasis (tinea versicolor), an infection that causes changes in skin color.

What forms does it come in?

This medication is available as a cream or lotion that you apply directly to the infected area of your skin. When used as directed, you can expect to see improvements in a few weeks.

Oxistat vs. Oxiconazole Nitrate

Oxiconazole Nitrate is the generic name for this medicine. Both brand and generic medications are equally safe and effective. Generic versions can be a little cheaper depending on your insurance.

How much will it cost?

Dr. B offers online consultations for $15—which is less than most copays. If a fungal infections prescription is appropriate, your out-of-pocket medication cost will depend on your insurance and where you decide to get your prescription filled. With a drug discount card, prices for Oxiconazole 1 % Topical Cream (30 gram tube) start at $211.47.
