About Clindamycin (Generic Cleocin T)

How does it work?

Clindamycin is an antibiotic medication that works by stopping the growth of bacteria in the body. It does this by interfering with the bacteria's ability to make proteins—which they need to survive and multiply. This can help treat acne, folliculitis and other infections.

What does it treat?

Clindamycin treats various bacterial infections, including skin infections, respiratory infections, bone and joint infections and infections in the reproductive system. It helps fight off these infections by stopping the growth of bacteria to encourage healing. It’s often prescribed as a folliculitis treatment or acne treatment.

What forms does it come in?

Clindamycin is available in various forms, such as topical solutions, creams, lotions, swabs, foams, gels, capsules, and oral liquids. The form you get depends on the type of infection you have and the medical provider's prescription.

Please note that Clindamycin pills and oral liquids are not listed among the available options on the Dr. B platform at this time.

Clindamycin vs. Cleocin T

Clindamycin is the active ingredient in Cleocin T—a brand version of the same medication. Cleocin T usually comes as a lotion or gel. Both are antibiotic medications that can help treat skin conditions caused by bacteria.

How much will it cost?

Dr. B offers online consultations for $15—which is less than most copays. If a folliculitis prescription is appropriate, your out-of-pocket medication cost will depend on your insurance and where you decide to get your prescription filled. With a drug discount card, prices for Clindamycin Phosphate 1 % Topical Swab (60 swab, medicated box) start at $22.63.

How do I use this medication?

Oral Clindamycin is taken by mouth, usually with water, once or several times a day. Topical Clindamycin lotions, creams and gels are applied directly to the cleaned skin of the affected area. A licensed provider will prescribe a specific dosage form and applicable instructions if you’re prescribed this medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of oral Clindamycin, take it as soon as you remember. But skip the missed dose if it’s close to your next scheduled dose. Don't take two doses at once. If you forget to apply a topical form, do so when you remember and continue with your regular schedule.

What happens if I use too much?

Taking too much oral medication might lead to unwanted side effects, like stomach discomfort. The topical form may be harmful if swallowed. If you have ingested the topical form—or have trouble breathing—immediately call your medical provider or local poison control center (800-222-1222).
